On Correcting Laining Errors

«There is a very interesting Tur directly on this point, where he quotes the Baal HaManhig that it is forbidden to correct a Baal Kriah because of the Issur of embarrassing the person. We do not Paskin this way, but nonetheless, it is noted.

כתב בעל המנהיג אם טעה הקורא או החזן המקרא אותו טוב שלא להגיה עליו על שגגותיו ברבים שלא להלבין פניו דאף על פי שטעה בה יצא ידי קריאה דאיתא במדרש שאם קרא לאהרן הרן יצא

והרמב"ם ז"ל כתב קרא וטעה אפילו בדקדוק אות אחת  מחזירין אותו עד שיקראנה בדקדוק

Some Poskim have extrapolated further to note that since Kh"T is d'rabbanan and embarrassment is a d'oraisso better to NOT correct than to embarrass.

A reasonable compromise is to correct gently.

The shul I usually attend has a rule that only the gabbaim correct him. One nudnik therefore runs over to the gabbanim a lot.

In my imaginary dream shul, the only person who may correct the qorei other than the gabbaim is next week's qorei. Correct him -- you've volunteered!

But I'm not sure, outside of Brisk, we really hold like the Rambam. Who sends a qorei back for BA'ah vs ba'AH (despite the change in tense)? I wonder if the Jewish world before we frummied up didn't hold like the Ba'al haManhig. I do not understand the sevara of risking halbanas panim, a derivative of shefichas damim, for the sake of a derabbanan that you are likely not being yotzei either way.

Asking non-rhetorically: What do unassimilated Sepharadim do? And in KAJ?
